Additional information

LIGHT Operation is a project funded under the European Union’s Interreg IIIC programme

Experience in a number of European countries has shown that effective co-operation and partnerships between local and regional Cultural Heritage Institutions can benefit regional development priorities in both social and economic spheres The LIGHT Operation will demonstrate the potential role of Public Libraries in establishing regional platforms for cooperation and knowledge sharing.

Overall objective
The LIGHT Operation will provide Public Libraries and their local partners with the necessary tools required to integrate, make accessible and promote key sources of regional Cultural Heritage in support of direct economic development through cultural tourism, development of the regional skills and knowledge base and the strengthening both cultural identity and social cohesion.

Expected achievement
The Operation will add value to the role of Public Libraries within the local environment and will make explicit constructs for regional partnership among cultural institutions. The implementation of working pilot service within each of the 5 participating regions (Bekes (Hungary), Bologna (Italy), Lisbon (Portugal), Roskilde (Denmark) and Veria (Greece) will test and demonstrate the potential for integrated and effective delivery of real services based on Cultural Heritage content to the end user. The pilot services range from portals which provide a single point of access to regional cultural resources to educational tools which support informal IT skills development. The definition of specific business models will point the way to the self-sustainability of such services. The whole process will be strengthened by an intensive approach to inter-regional learning based on experience.
